Chapter Fourteen

“Funny thing, Joanie. Have you noticed nothing bad has happened since Callahan and Arleigh left? Now I wonder why that is?”

“Rube, get a life. Can’t you ever think of anything else to talk about?”

“Guess not. You know, Joanie, when your brain is as limited as mine, you have to make do.”

Joan said nothing. Undoubtedly because she knew it was more effective than if she’d replied. She knew he wanted her. She could hardly help but know it. Most of the time he watched her games, flirting with her when he felt like it and baiting her when he didn’t. Most of the time he didn’t let her games get to him, but then there were the nights when he saw her at the Neon Moon, watching her encourage all the other men, and knew he’d have given anything to have her.

“Have you and Edwin come up with any bright ideas of where to go next? I am in charge of the boat, here. Don’t you think I need to know?”

“Ask Edwin.” Joan turned to go into the cabin.

Rube grabbed her arm and stopped her. “Tell me something. Why do you dislike me so much?”

“I don’t dislike you.”

He couldn’t stop the hope that flared, even though he knew it was a mistake.

She added deliberately, “I don’t think about you at all.”

“God, you’re a cold bitch,” he told her departing back. Yes, she was cold all right, but underneath… Underneath she was a volcano, and he wouldn’t mind feeling the force of the explosion. He always had liked to live on the edge. But Joanie had the hots for Callahan. A knockout like her wasn’t used to being turned down. He figured Callahan must have turned her down, or why else would she still want him? Joanie liked the thrill of the chase. Once she’d had a man, he was useless to her. Use ’em and lose’em. Rube was under no illusions concerning her character, but then, her character wasn’t what interested him. A cold and calculating bitch, but a bitch with the body of Venus and a face like an angel. What a combination.

“Daydreaming, Miller? Now, is that going to pay your salary?”

“What salary?” Rube asked, shaking hands. “When did you get back, Callahan? How did it go?”

Cade started singing We’re in the Money, off-key.

“Don’t quit your day job,” Rube advised him. “I take it things went well.”

“You take it right. We got in late last night. Arleigh should be here before long. So, what’s been happening here?”

“Not a damn thing. We didn’t even have any accidents. I was commenting on that to Joanie. Maybe you and Arleigh should stay away more often.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“Nothing, I’m just speculating.”

“Don’t strain your brain too much.”

“I won’t. So tell me about it. Both the contacts came through?”

“Yeah. It was an interesting trip.”

“Earth to Callahan.” Rube waved his hand in front of Cade’s face. “You look like you’ve been on a bender. Have you slept any time in the last three days?” Cade smiled but said nothing.
